In a media landscape where LGBTQ coverage has been shrinking for years, Uncloseted Media is doing the opposite, digging deeper, harder, truer.

Launched in 2024 by journalist and NYU professor Spencer Macnaughton, Uncloseted Media was founded on the belief that once marriage equality was won, much of the mainstream press quietly decided the story was over. It wasn’t, it isn’t, and Uncloseted Media was launched to prove that.

Uncloseted Media describes its mission plainly: providing objective, nonpartisan, rigorous, original journalism that investigates America’s anti-LGBTQ landscape and elevates everyday American heroes. No hot takes, no noise, just journalism.

The publication has already tackled stories the mainstream press hasn’t touched, from the systematic erasure of LGBTQ content from federal websites and national monuments to the denial of gender-affirming care for incarcerated trans people — stories the administration gets away with precisely because so few outlets are paying attention.

Uncloseted Media publishes on Substack and hopes to partner with mainstream news outlets to broaden the reach of its investigations. Who We Are

Uncloseted Media is a new investigative media organization committed to providing you with objective, nonpartisan, rigorous, LGBTQ-focused journalism that examines America’s anti-LGBTQ ecosystem and elevates the voices of everyday American heroes.

The publication was founded in 2024 by journalist/producer Spencer Macnaughton, who has worked at 60 Minutes and The Wall Street Journal and teaches LGBTQ journalism at NYU.
